Choosing the right Kitchen Backsplash
Where to find backsplash ideas
“That kitchen is fantastic! I so want to cook in there!”
How many times have we made this comment if front of a picture that shows a stunning kitchen? Or at friends’ house, after they’ve just remodeled their home.
And then, when it’s our kitchen backsplash that needs a new design, well… it looks like impossible for us to choose!
Look for pictures
The first thing to do is to look around, try to get ideas from magazines and websites of design. There might be new a backsplash tile that is just perfect for our project, and we just don’t know about it yet. We will find out that there are many other beautiful options other than subway tiles.
Visit your friends’ home
It’s really useful to get backsplash ideas from our friends. Each one of their kitchen has different color scheme and combination, different cabinets and countertops, different flooring. And even the curtains and the table cover come in play. Let’s take the opportunity to ask them how they decided on that kitchen design, and what are the required maintenance cares. Sometimes we might prefer to chose the practical aspect over the aesthetic one. Their experience might help us chose more wisely thinking about our own routine.
Ask a tile expert
Lastly, visit a Design Center and ask a professional designer to suggest you for your project.
Bringing a sample of all the other colors around and a couple of pictures that show the space and the light will help the designer to direct us towards the right way, or sometimes they might help us consider a more original and unusual tile option. Also, special care and maintenance, or special installation techniques, these are all information that could be required for the product we like the most, and an expert will guide us to the right selection.
Traditional or Contemporary?
There is not a right answer to this question, follow your own taste and try to be consistent with the style of your home.
Keeping in consideration the last trends for kitchen design is important, we want to make sure whatever we select does not look older than the design we are getting rid of.
It’s also important, on the other side, keep in constant focus what is the overall look of our home.
Gray is super popular, we find images and examples of gray tiles in gray kitchens with grey cabinets.. they are just gorgeous!
What if our home is all beige? What if the only element of gray in our home is our driveway?
Would it still make sense for us to use such a cold tone in our kitchen?
Design always follows what’s trendy at the moment – some elements suddenly become a “must” and you can find them in any application.
And all of a sudden, they disappear and the new trendy style takes their place!
This is exactly what you want if your style is modern, and you are always working to adapt your design as the trend goes.
But it is also ok if you want to renovate your kitchen look today and make sure it will last as long as you own that home without becoming outdated.
If you still can’t chose, that means you probably like that style that they call Transitional – mixing some element of the modern design with a base field of traditional and timeless.
Then start selecting a main tile that you know for sure being timeless and somehow neutral, and then combine it with something new and with a fresh look.
You will end up with the most beautiful design, original and very unique, that will express fully your own personality!
