“That bathroom is fantastic! It would look just gorgeous in my house!”
How many times have we made this comment if front of a picture that shows a stunning bathroom? Or at friends’ house, after they’ve just remodeled their home. And then, when it’s our own home that needs a new design, well… it looks like impossible for us to choose!
There are different sources where to get tile design ideas.
Looking at model homes
This is a wonderful way to get ideas for our remodeling project. Model homes are usually designed considering a style that is current, that well adapts to the area where we live, that is young and fresh, and mostly is always well coordinated with the environment.
If we decide to visit model homes for design inspiration, we most certainly have to remember that we have to visit homes that have many elements in common with ours. For example, are they both a single home, or an apartment? Are they located in the city or in the countryside?
Searching on Pinterest
(or on any other website that has pictures of remodels)
Oh my! There is really everything on Pinterest! But most of all there are pictures of gorgeous homes, with their magnificent kitchen and bathrooms. Every color, every texture, every style! Make a new board on Pinterest and save all the ideas that you like. Remember to not only consider “grey” because your friend just told you that now it’s the color that is most IN.. select different things, because what looks just perfect into someone else’s home, it might not work as well in our house!
Consulting a Professional Designer
Some other times, well… there are just so many choices!
We can’t find anything we love, the textures are so many that we are not sure of what would be the best surface for our project.. Or maybe, we just can’t visualize the whole beauty of the tiles, because it’s hard to tell from just 1 piece.
A professional help comes in very handy at this point, to help us direct our interest to what we really like – to help us concentrate on the right products!
To make event that smallest project a great achievement!
Our client’s project started with an outdated kitchen that needed a new look.
The original cabinets were brown with formica countertops, all of this over a beige vinyl floor that was popping off because of a mold issue due to a roof leak. The client’s first concern was maintenance and durability, certainly after going through a mold remedy process it’s very understandable.
The project included all the aspects of a kitchen remodel, introducing porcelain tiles on the floor and granite dark countertops, and beautiful painted maple cabinets with lots of storage space.
The French Pattern layout was created by combining different sizes in order to give a consistent pattern, that resembles an original Italian Villa floor.
On the floor is Pietra d’Assisi in Noce color, a travertine look porcelain tile with chiseled edges set into a french pattern. Thanks to this type of pattern, the ranch home acquired a new elegant taste, a new Old-World look that will last forever with its classy personality.
The cabinetry was designed ad hoc from our design center, to match each one of the client’s needs and wishes, thanks to the the semi-custom options that a great cabinetry company such as Welborn offers. Cabinetry is very important in the kitchen design, the door style has a nice detailed front with an elegant raised panel. This is all completed by a Slate color paint without any additional glaze, to let the details on the door express all their beauty naturally.
Pull out tall cabinets allow you to keep any item handy, and within small reach. Small stools and removing all the cans in the front to reach something in the bacj are no longer need
Brushed nickel fixtures and cabinet hardware are a perfect match for the stainless steel appliances, as well as the antique bronze chandelier that overlooks the central island.
The pantry is a complete pull out cabinet, divided in 2 sections, that open separately and that can be accessed from either side. This allows the client to reach each individual item inside of her pantry without the need of bending, diggin in, stepping over a stool, or moving everything out to be able to get that one jar she is looking for. The upper side of the tower cabinet has a large shelf for storing those pots that she rarely uses.
On the side of the fridge, a narrow door opens to reveal a pull out tray rack for baking sheets.
And right after that, a corner cabinet which includes 2 spinning and pull out shelves for allowing the use of every blind corners.
Everything in the design is meant to help getting the most storage with the most comfort. Large and deep pull out drawers and shelves are the main guests of this kitchen!
Thanks to these features, everything can be stored in the bottom and back of the base cabinets, without the need to bend over or crawl on the knees to get pots and pans. Maximizing the storage availability with the use of all the space.
Travertine beveled subway tiles finish this kitchen dream remodel, and completes the design to a new renovated kitchen to love!
Together with the Black Galaxy Granite countertops, these elements all combined are a piece of art inside the same room, a welcoming, cozy and sophisticated environment where to entertain any guest!
Choosing the right Kitchen Backsplash
Where to find backsplash ideas
“That kitchen is fantastic! I so want to cook in there!”
How many times have we made this comment if front of a picture that shows a stunning kitchen? Or at friends’ house, after they’ve just remodeled their home.
And then, when it’s our kitchen backsplash that needs a new design, well… it looks like impossible for us to choose!
Look for pictures
The first thing to do is to look around, try to get ideas from magazines and websites of design. There might be new a backsplash tile that is just perfect for our project, and we just don’t know about it yet. We will find out that there are many other beautiful options other than subway tiles.
Visit your friends’ home
It’s really useful to get backsplash ideas from our friends. Each one of their kitchen has different color scheme and combination, different cabinets and countertops, different flooring. And even the curtains and the table cover come in play. Let’s take the opportunity to ask them how they decided on that kitchen design, and what are the required maintenance cares. Sometimes we might prefer to chose the practical aspect over the aesthetic one. Their experience might help us chose more wisely thinking about our own routine.
Ask a tile expert
Lastly, visit a Design Center and ask a professional designer to suggest you for your project.
Bringing a sample of all the other colors around and a couple of pictures that show the space and the light will help the designer to direct us towards the right way, or sometimes they might help us consider a more original and unusual tile option. Also, special care and maintenance, or special installation techniques, these are all information that could be required for the product we like the most, and an expert will guide us to the right selection.
Traditional or Contemporary?
There is not a right answer to this question, follow your own taste and try to be consistent with the style of your home.
Keeping in consideration the last trends for kitchen design is important, we want to make sure whatever we select does not look older than the design we are getting rid of.
It’s also important, on the other side, keep in constant focus what is the overall look of our home.
Gray is super popular, we find images and examples of gray tiles in gray kitchens with grey cabinets.. they are just gorgeous!
What if our home is all beige? What if the only element of gray in our home is our driveway?
Would it still make sense for us to use such a cold tone in our kitchen?
Design always follows what’s trendy at the moment – some elements suddenly become a “must” and you can find them in any application.
And all of a sudden, they disappear and the new trendy style takes their place!
This is exactly what you want if your style is modern, and you are always working to adapt your design as the trend goes.
But it is also ok if you want to renovate your kitchen look today and make sure it will last as long as you own that home without becoming outdated.
If you still can’t chose, that means you probably like that style that they call Transitional – mixing some element of the modern design with a base field of traditional and timeless.
Then start selecting a main tile that you know for sure being timeless and somehow neutral, and then combine it with something new and with a fresh look.
You will end up with the most beautiful design, original and very unique, that will express fully your own personality!
Kitchen Renovation in just a few steps
It’s well known that we all wait all year long for Christmas to come and enjoy the company of our family and friends!
There is no better time in the year to prepare our home for receiving all or our guests and make it the most beautiful and cozy environment, where to spend great time together and create wonderful new memories to share.
And of course, it’s also the best occasion to prepare our kitchen to welcome everybody in with a new and fresh look. A look that keeps it cozy and comfortable like it’s always been, but that donate a small something of freshness and style we want to obtain.
Here below a few tips on how to achieve all of this, with just few steps.
1. CHOOSE YOUR COLORS
You can find the perfect color palettes online or in hardware stores, so you can select the color ranges that best match and make sure your design will be balance and pleasant to the eyes. When you decide which one you like the best, do your best to stick to it.
Changing them at half way will make it harder to achieve the result desired.
You will have plenty of options to add pops of colors here and there with accessories and decorations, like towels and curtains and other little elements of personal touch that will make the room more “Yours”.
2. CHOOSE YOUR STYLE
No one knows betther than you what is the style you like in your house.
But if you want to make changes without the risk of building something new that looks old, there are hundreds of websites, magazines, and designer showrooms that you can take inspiration from. Browse around, and when you find something you like then try to imagine it inside of your home. Would it look good? Or you just love it, but it would fight with your mahogany leather couch? Make sure any style elements you are combining together will look balanced and will fit with the other rooms. Once you’ve picked the right one, just go ahead and choose your materials!
3. CHOOSE YOUR MATERIAL
There are many materials nowadays that you can use in your renovation projects, you never know enough to know them all. Of course, looking at budget becomes a must during this step – but especially for a kitchen backsplash, it’s never a huge deal.
Ask yourself a few questions:
How much will I have to work on keeping this surface clean?
What type of chemical resistance this material have?
What type of food or beverages or other house hold products will harm it?
Is there a specific maintenance routine that I need to follow in order to keep my surface in good shape?
Does it break easily? Is it possible to repair?
All these questions are just a few examples of what you need to consider while choosing the materials.
Make yourself a list of all your concerns, and find manufacturers instructions or visit a designer center or a tile/granite/cabinet store to receive help. Make sure you have all the answers you need before purchasing.
Get the best from your kitchen when you love it!
And you’ll love it when you design it around yourself. Seek for suggestions, ideas, recommendations… but remember that no one can tell you what you like!
